Meet Our Brand-New Family Tree Firsts Blogger!

Shannon Bennett

December 2, 2011

About a year ago we started a new feature here at Family Tree University. The Family Tree Firsts blog was created to allow us to follow along with a newbie genealogist as she began the process of discovering her family history.

Nancy Shively served as our first-ever Family Tree Firsts blogger. If you’ve been following along, you’ve watched as Nancy reunited her dad with his long-lost family, took her first research trip, and blossomed into a full-fledged family historian. Nancy’s no longer a newbie, and she’s graduated from Family Tree Firsts (her final post is here). You can find her on her own blog, Gathering Stories, where she’s already sharing more of her family’s journey.

Dozens of new genealogists entered our contest to our next blogger, and it was a very tough decision. We’re pleased to announce that Shannon Bennett has joined us as our new Family Tree Firsts blogger. Shannon is a stay-at-home mom from Virginia. She has a degree in biology with an emphasis in genetics, so it’s no surprise that she’s become interested in her own family history.

Shannon is already a student at Family Tree University, where she’s taken several of our new First Steps courses. She’ll continue to study here “on campus” and share what she she learns with us. She’ll also be trying out some of our new offerings, including our brand-new Power Courses.

Watch for Shannon’s first post late next week!

Family Tree Firsts is an ongoing blog series at Family Tree University.

  1. Thanks Nancy! This is very exciting and I look forward to sharing my adventure with everyone. Good luck on your new blog and on all your future discoveries as well.

  2. Shannon, welcome to this most interesting and addictive sport. I greatly envy you living in VA. So much of the genealogy histories begin there. Can’t wait to hear of your experiences.

  3. It is great to see your posting on this site. CONGRATS on your great success. i ahve been busy for quite a while working with many foks on my Family tree and others too. MERRY CHRISTMAS & A HAPPY NEW YEAR.

  4. Shannon is my fantastic daughter-in-law and in the past 16 months, she has uncovered more information than all our previous family members put together. She has been researching both her family and my son’s plus some adoptions way back and a very interesting stepmother. We have discovered new living relatives who got in contact with us and she has been able to present previously unknown researched based stories and disproved some long held beliefs. It has been a roller coaster of fun with Shannon’s hard work.

  5. Thanks for all the words of encouragement. Looking forward to learning a lot and making tons of discoveries!

  6. Shannon! My ancestry is in Orange/Spotsylvania Counties. Would love to share info on Garrett and other surnames.
    Good luck with your blog.
